2024 BMW R 12 nineT Review

A decade since its debut in the BMW lineup, the iconic R nineT undergoes a significant evolution for 2024, transforming into the R 12 nineT. This latest iteration draws inspiration from the styling aesthetics of the 1970s, showcasing a first-look edition that pays homage to the retro era. Throughout its illustrious history, the R nineT has taken on various forms, from racer replicas and scramblers to sportbikes and urban adventurers. With the introduction of the R 12 nineT, BMW continues to blend heritage with modern innovation, offering riders a fresh and nostalgic perspective on the classic R nineT platform.

While specific details remain scarce at this early stage, it’s confirmed that the R 12 nineT will maintain its power from an oil-cooled boxer twin engine. Although the exact specifications, including whether there will be a displacement increase corresponding to the new R 12 branding, are yet to be disclosed, it is evident that the motor has undergone significant reworking. The evolution of the iconic boxer twin engine in the R 12 nineT promises enhanced performance and a renewed riding experience, aligning with BMW’s commitment to innovation and refinement.

The 2024 BMW R 12 nineT introduces significant styling modifications, as described by BMW Motorrad’s Head of Design, Edgar Heinrich. Embracing a purist design language, the motorcycle showcases a clear tank, seat, and rear line, reminiscent of the traditional /5 series or the iconic R 90 S from the 1970s. The tank itself, upon initial inspection, embodies the classic BMW boxer tank with a distinctive bend in the lower edge, offering a nod to the brand’s heritage and providing a familiar knee contact point. The incorporation of side covers in the frame triangle area further enhances the authentic roadster look, drawing inspiration from BMW motorcycles of the 1970s.

In addition to the stylistic changes, the 2024 BMW R 12 nineT features several technical updates. These include a new frame, an inverted fork, radially mounted Brembo calipers for the front discs, adjustments to the shock configuration, and a revised rear brake caliper. These technical enhancements not only contribute to the motorcycle’s modernized appearance but also promise improved performance and handling dynamics, aligning with BMW’s commitment to advancing both form and function in their motorcycles.

Head of BMW Motorrad, Dr. Markus Schramm, emphasizes the pivotal role played by the R nineT and its customizable concept in shaping the new Heritage experience for BMW Motorrad, particularly in celebrating the brand’s 90th birthday. The R nineT has emerged as an essential cornerstone in BMW’s model range, establishing a successful heritage story around the legendary BMW boxer engines.

With the introduction of the new R 12 nineT, Dr. Schramm highlights its evolution with an even more classic and reduced design language. The motorcycle offers greater degrees of freedom for customization, staying true to the essence of the heritage concept. Dr. Schramm also notes the incorporation of new and innovative technology, underscoring BMW’s commitment to blending timeless design with cutting-edge advancements. The R 12 nineT is positioned to carry forward the legacy of the iconic boxer engines while embracing a modern and customizable approach that resonates with riders seeking a unique and personalized riding experience.

With BMW Motorrad commemorating its 100th anniversary, updating the 10-year-old nineT is a fine way to celebrate. As fans of many of the iterations of the nineT since its inception, we look forward to testing the new 2024 BMW R 12 nineT.
